TRANSPORT SECRETARY
Aerolíneas: 'value
is zero'
Transport Secretary Ricardo Jaime yesterday
told the bicameral committee monitoring
privatization that the value of Aerolíneas
Argentinas and Austral is "as far as
we're concerned zero," stating that
"all the reports indicate that the
companies have no value and that they are
in danger of dissolution." The bicameral
committee's actions were in keeping with
these statements, as it issued a ruling
to approve the official government valuation,
rejecting the one which Credit Suisse made
at the request of the Spanish Marsans group,
which owns the companies.
The figures approved by the parliamentary
committee indicate that the company, which
Argentina is aiming to nationalize, has
a negative value of 2,540,338,289 pesos,
while the Swiss bank's assessment states
that the value is "between zero and
60 million dollars for Aerolíneas
and between 330 and 450 million dollars
for Austral," said Jaime.
With regards to these figures, Jaime said,
"I thought it was a bank, not a tailor's
shop, because these numbers are tailor-made."
The committee also asked the government
to implement the necessary measures to assure
the acquisition of Aerolíneas Argentinas
and Austral, calling for Marsans representatives
to present their stance on the issue next
week.
